Organize your site and keep notes

Ask your assistant to note dates like a redesign, group your pages and searches by theme, and report traffic by site section.

Over time you redesign pages, launch sales and add new sections. Months later, it is hard to remember what happened when. MeasureScale lets your assistant keep dated notes and named groups in your MeasureScale account. It can also show your Google traffic by site section.

Questions to ask

Keep notes on your timeline

  • “Add a note on 3 March: we launched the new shop design.”
  • “What notes do I have for my bakery site?”
  • “Change the date of my redesign note to 5 March.”

Group your pages and searches

  • “Make a content group called ‘Recipes’ for every page under /recipes/.”
  • “Make a topic cluster called ‘Gluten free’ for every search that contains ‘gluten free’.”
  • “Which content groups and topic clusters have I set up, and what are their rules?”

Report by section

  • “Which sections of my site, like /recipes/ and /shop/, brought the most clicks last month?”
  • “Break down my blog by its subsections.”

A good conversation

Here is an example of how a conversation can go.

  1. You ask: “Note that we redesigned the shop on 3 March.” The assistant saves a dated note on your site’s timeline in MeasureScale.
  2. You ask: “Group all pages under /recipes/ as ‘Recipes’, and all pages under /shop/ as ‘Shop’.” The assistant creates the two content groups and shows you their rules.
  3. You ask: “How much Google traffic did /recipes/ and /shop/ get last month?” The assistant adds up clicks for each section and shows each one’s share of the total.

Reading the answer

  • A content group is a named set of pages. A topic cluster is a named set of searches. Both use simple text rules, such as “starts with /blog/”.
  • Groups and clusters organize your pages and searches. They do not carry their own traffic figures. For traffic, ask by section, such as /recipes/.
  • A page belongs to the first group whose rule matches it. A broad early group can claim pages before later groups.
  • The rule “starts with /blog/” does not match the page /blog, because that address has no slash at the end.
  • A section report covers your top 1,000 pages from Google. The answer says how much of your traffic those pages cover.

Tips

  • Notes, groups and clusters live only in your MeasureScale account. They change nothing in Google.
  • To save or change them, approve the app with permission to make changes. See Read and write tools.
  • Changing or deleting asks you to confirm first. If you decline, nothing changes. A delete is permanent.
  • Write a note on the day something changes. It helps you explain a rise or fall later.
